SD HORT BOOK CLUB: Announcing Next Three Books For The New Year & A Reminder There Is No Meeting In December

By Karen England, for Let's Talk Plants! December 2024.

It's official! The next three books to read are; for January 2025, Life in the Garden, February 2025, The Tree Collectors and March 2025, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Please note: We are taking December off.

It's official! The voting is in and the next three books to read are:

January 2025, Life in the Garden by Penelope Lively

February 2025, The Tree Collectors by Amy Stewart

March 2025, Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard

Of the thirty-some official members in the SD Hort Book Club, nine of those members voted on three titles before the November deadline from a list of twelve potential books for us to read in the next quarter, making eight of those nine (I am disqualified) eligible to win a copy of Margaret Renkl's new Weekly Backyard Journal titled Leaf, Cloud, Crow and beautifully illustrated by her brother Billy, that I, Karen, am giving away. We read the book that the journal is based on, The Comfort of Crows, earlier this year in May.

And the winner is...

After trying and failing to use a wood turned toy top that Ray Bowls made to pick a name from a list when it stopped spinning, Karen wrote each name on a separate post-it and folded each of them up the same and put them all, mixed up, of course, in a tarnished silver cup 2004 SD County Fair Paul Ecke Jr. Flower & Garden Show DON DIEGO Award that she found in a box in the SD Hort storage facility. And the winner is....

Come to the January meeting to find out who won . . .

Have you heard how much fun the SD Hort Book Club is?

It's amazing, and I'm not just saying that because I'm the head muckety-muck. I have learned so much since the book club started in January of 2021. The membership roll is over thirty readers with a few lurkers who dip in and out as the books pique their interests and their schedules allow. There is, however, plenty of room for more, so if you've been thinking that a horticulturally curated book club was just thing to do on the first Monday evening of every month (except December) at 4:30p/5 pm on Zoom then, please, by all means, join us! Just send me, Karen England, an email c/o info@sdhort.org with "Book Club" in the subject line and I will add you to the roster. It's free, and guests and members are welcome.

Please consider joining the SD Hort Book Club and read some great horticulturally imbued books along with us. Some titles are old, some new, some historical, some biographical, some fictional, some educational and all enjoyable.

To join the SDHBC, just send an email to Karen at info@sdhort.org with "Book Club" in the subject line to receive the Zoom link to the meetings.

We meet on Zoom, the first Monday of most months at 4:30p for social/5p for discussion.

Note: The Zoom SDHBC meeting link is not published, instead it is emailed to discussion participants. If you would like to receive the link, please email info@sdhort.org with “book club” in the subject line.

The SD Hort Book Club was started by then new president Karen England in December 2020 without her having any idea if it would be well received. She desperately needed to add to the SDHS offerings at a time when the organization lost the most important aspects of the group - being able to meet in-person or have the ever-popular garden tour. Karen also needed it to be something that wouldn’t cost the SDHS money or involve the already overworked volunteers and board of directors.

Years ago, for remarkably similar reasons, Karen ran a garden book club for the customers of Sunshine Gardens in Encinitas, her family’s business, which met monthly in the amphitheater, and it was a hit! Mostly because it didn’t cost the nursery anything and no staff (apart from Karen) were involved. Taking knowledge gained from that experience, which she loved(!), Karen adapted it to a pandemical digital world. Karen says, "I’m so glad I did! I love this book club and its members!"
