GARDEN SURROUNDINGS: Happy New Year

By Francesca Filanc, for Let’s Talk Plants! January 2025.

As this year draws to a close, we are reminded about what is important in life. We all have trials and tribulations, but the love of family and friends, having work that we love, exercising or doing a sport, and communing with nature are all important elements of a balanced, joyful life.

Regardless of the trials and tribulations that we all deal with in life, the new year signifies hope and promise. There are so many chores to do in the garden in January from feeding citrus trees to pruning roses. Check out my mom‘s book for a checklist.

There are two editions of Pat's wonderful book. But only the 2010 edition of Pat Welsh's Southern California Organic Gardening Month-by-Month is available digitally.
FYI- This out-of-print 1992 edition is a perennial favorite with local gardeners of the two iterations of Pat's classic book and well worth the effort to acquire.

The gardeners just planted clover on a slope here at my home. This will grow up and look lush and green and after the clover dies they will turn it into the soil. This will help replenish soil nutrients for the new things being planted in late spring and early summer.

Despite all the difficulties in life, January is a time that we can start anew. Notwithstanding the ongoing difficulties and sadness we may have, being in nature and in our gardens can fill our hearts with gladness and joy. It is so amazing that it is already 2025! How time flies. But in the garden there is no time. We can sit with a cup of tea and a good book or we can work in our gardens listening to the birds singing.

This morning when I went outside early the birds were singing their cheerful songs.
